FirstRAID AMT™ Available in 2TB, 3TB, 8TB, or 12 TB models

The FirstRAID with Automatic Mirroring Technology (AMT) is an external RAID5 volume that mirrors it’s data to a High-Rely classic removable drive of the same capacity.  It can be connected via USB 3.0 /2.0 or eSATA.

The host machine requires no RAID controller or drivers.  With AMT turned on the entire system appears to the host as a single external drive. Any data stored on the RAID volume is automatically mirrored to the bottom drive bay (for the 2TB and 3TB models only). When a new drive is swapped in, the Automatic Mirroring Technology makes another new copy of the RAID volume to the new removable drive.

The FirstRAID provides greater redundancy than our single drive units. The green LCD panel and lights on the front of unit warn of RAID failures. Certain models include hot spare drives that will automatically come online and rebuild into the array upon drive failure. The blue LCD display on the front of the removable drive provides temperature and diagnostic information. Softwareless backup becomes possible when using the system as a primary (nearline) data repository. A Windows utility called HW Manager can provide emailed alerts upon mirror failure.

The FirstRAID is an external RAID5 with several great features:

• Built in RAID Controller: A self contained hardware RAID controller means that nothing to be installed in the host machine.  It Supports RAID 0,1,5,10, and actively monitors each disk in the array.
• Self Replicating: A built-in mirror board allows the RAID array to automatically replicate to a removable High-Rely media tray at speeds up to 400GB/hr plus.  That means that you can completely replicate 3TB of data in about 8-12 hours.* (Note that Automatic mirroring can only be done on 2TB or 3TB model)
• Large and Reliable Storage: The 5 Disk RAID array can range from 2 TB to 12 TB depending on your storage requirements. The Array can be attached to Windows, Linux, or OSX based computers.
• Removable Media Trays: The removable bottom bay uses our standard High-Rely removable drive, which is fully enclosed and designed for daily swapping and easy storage.  The SATA drives used in the removable drive trays are available in sizes up to 3TB.
• Multiple Connection Interfaces: The FirstRAID AMT can be connected via USB 2.0, USB 3.0, or eSATA.  Since the RAID and mirroring are built in, you can even move the system from one host to another.

Available Configurations:

•  2TB RAID5 – with 2 hot spare drives (uses 5 1TB drives in upper array)
• 3TB RAID5 – with 1 hot spare drive (uses 5 1TB drives in upper array)
• 8TB RAID5 (uses 5 2TB drives in upper array)
• 12TB RAID5 (uses 5 3TB drives in upper array)

The 2TB and 3TB models allow for the unit to mirror between the RAID array and the removable disk. Any information copied to the unit in that instance would be written to both the RAID array and the removable media simultainiously. That feature requires that the removable drive be the same size or larger than the RAID array.  We recommend getting more than one media tray for these models so the removable bay can be removed and securely stored.

The 8TB and 12TB models cannot be mirrored to the bottom bay since the maximum single hard drive size is currently limited to 3TB.  These configurations would present as two separate volumes to the host machine.  As an example drive F: might be 12TB and drive g: (the removable disk) might be 3TB.

The LCD panel at the top of the unit represents the primary hardware RAID controller.  It can be used to monitor drive statuses of the RAID array. The Upper RAID volume typically stays connected and online to the host system at all times, allowing for continuous incremental backup storage or even providing users with near-line access to shared folders, documents, photos, etc.

Other Features of the FirstRAID AMT:

• Automatic Recovery from Drive Failure. All 4 of our standard configurations (RAID5) will continue to operate with the loss of a single hard drive. The 2TB and 3TB configurations include one or more “Hot Spare” drives, which will automatically be pulled into the array and used should one of the primary drives fail. Drives in the Array use the native SATA connectors on the drive and can be hot swapped.
• Faster than NAS. Direct Attached Storage is typically faster then Network Attached Storage (NAS) and it inherits the security properties of the server or workstation it is attached to. No Active Directory, time synch, or permissions issues to deal with.
• One or Multiple Volumes. You may prefer to expose two volumes to the host. A switch on the back of the unit will change it from Mirror to JBOD (Just a Bunch Of Disks) mode. This feature allows you manage the swap drive’s content yourself or, if necessary, break the mirror to restore from an older drive.
• Swap drive is Compatible with Other High-Rely Drive Enclosures. Although you can flip a switch on the back of the unit to turn off mirroring, we have found some customers prefer to purchase an additional SlimLine to simplify the restore process. This is to avoid accidentally over-writing valuable archived data when inserting a previously created drive into the bottom bay.
• Monitoring & Management Software Included. Because of its unique in-line controller, software is not required and no RAID drivers are needed. But you can install monitoring and management software to view or control the mirroring status. The software can also create status emails to the administrator on error.  (Requires Windows Based OS)
• Upgradeable. Uses standard 3.5″ SATA hard drives. Allows you to expand or replace drives as needed in the future without requiring any special proprietary hard drives.
