RAIDFrame Plus NAS – Featuring Largest Removable Hard Drive on the Market

72TB using four 18TB RAIDPacs
Stackable for Expansion

4 Bay RAIDFrame Plus NAS

The “RAIDFrame Plus” NAS  uses transportable RAIDPacs up to 18TB (12TB in RAID 5 mode) for your backup.  RAIDPacs are the largest hard drive for backup. Each one consists of 3 hard drives and a RAID5 controller, which are removed as a unit.   The removable Raidpac can be used for offsite transport or to seed replication. Transportable media are the fastest way to recover from disasters while overcoming the high cost of Internet connections and the inability to purchase sufficient bandwidth in some areas.

The “plus” in the product name refers to the ability of pairs of removable RAIDPacs to be mirrored (RAID 10 or RAID5+1).  With mirroring turned on, neither your servers nor the backup software are aware when drives are swapped.  Because the primary volume can stay connected at all times, software issues associated with removing drives are avoided. Once synched, one of each pair can be removed for offsite storage.  Alternatively, configure each of the RAIDPacs as stand alone volumes and use 1 per server,  1 per day of the week, or design your own backup scenario.

New!  Removable drives can now be protected by the hardware using robust AES 256 bit encryption.  Learn more.

Each removable RAIDPac contains 3 SATA drives and a RAID5 controller

The RAIDFrame Plus includes removable iSCSI support, front accessible boot drive(s), industrial grade components, a custom cooling controller, and knowledgeable U.S. based tech support. Use any popular browser to configure it. The simple menu driven interface is similar to many popular routers, allowing configuration of IP address, machine name, and other important settings.

With RAIDFrame Plus you can replace tape. You can also replace (or supplement) expensive monthly cloud strategies. The system offers SMB connections (a simple Windows share), NFS (easy Linux, Unix, Vmware share), or iSCSI (faster block level drive access that allows backup speeds of 300 Gigabytes/Hr).   Ideal for customers that need rack mounted large format backup and disaster recovery.

The 2/4 Bay RAIDFrame Plus is a backup device with up to four removable RAIDpacs.  Pairs of removable Pacs can mirror to one another or they can appear as separate drives.

The RAIDFrame Plus is an Ethernet attached backup system designed with support for removable RAID arrays. Conventional network appliances have fixed internal hard drives. By contrast, the RAIDFrame Plus system has fully enclosed removable RAIDpacs for frequent media swaps.  RAIDPacs are designed for daily swap, making it possible to create large transportable copies of your backup. Use your favorite software for backup and/or additional off-site (cloud) replication.

The system connects via Gigabit Ethernet (10GB optional) and supports network shares or iSCSI.  By installing the included iSCSI drive management software on the machine(s) you back up, RAIDPacs can be hot-swapped like a USB drive. Inserted drives will reappear to Windows machines on the network with consistent drive letters, allowing your favorite backup software to send jobs to the removable drive without requiring user intervention or a server reboot.

Support for RAID 10 or RAID5+1 configurations provide optional mirroring of RAIDPacs.  Scheduled mirroring is also supported, allowing the user to choose a point in time snapshot rather than immediately mirroring potential problems to the secondary RAIDPac.  Some customers even use the RAIDFrame for softwareless backup.

We know speed is crucial for backup/restore. Using Gigabit Ethernet and our iSCSI software, the removable drive can attain 75% the speed of a locally attached SATA drive. Upgrade to 10GB Ethernet for even faster backup. A powerful Intel processor provides sufficient performance for both physical and virtual environments to restore quickly and easily.

The removable RAIDPac can be formatted NTFS (Native Windows format) or EXT4 and can even be used as stand alone drives by plugging them into a USB port.

  • Retain Multiple Copies of Your Data. By simply swapping a new RAIDPac in prior to your nightly backup, you can make multiple copies of your data. Transporting your media off-site insures additional protection.  Mirroring occurs at around 700-800 Gigabytes per hour when not loaded with simultaneous backup jobs.
  • Use as Local Appliance for Cloud Strategies. Leave the RAIDPacs in place if you prefer to use as a high capacity NAS with off-site replication.  Or use the RAIDPacs to “seed” the initial backup to the data center.
  • Removable Media. We configure RAIDPacs with 3 SATA drives (typically 1, 2, 3, 4 or 6TB).  RAIDPac media can be accessed in the field via USB3 or SATA ports.
  • Large Removable Storage. Three 3.5″ drives are supported in each RAIDPac yielding 18TB for a RAID 0 configuration when using 6TB hard drives. In the RAID 5 configuration a RAIDPac stores up to 12TB and protects against a single drive failure. Smaller 3.5″ hard drives are also supported for installations that want redundancy at lower price points.
  • Interchangeable. You can plug your media into our conventional Direct Attached Storage RAIDFrame products (USB2/3 or eSATA connected). This gives you unprecedented ability to verify and restore your backups elsewhere.
  • Support for Big Data.  By stacking and using high bandwidth ethernet connections and a central iSCSI controller, larger configurations can be supported. Head end can be Windows based as shown in this Big Data design layout.
  • Backup Support for Virtual Environments. Having a RAIDFrame unit provides backup storage that can be accessed by popular virtualization platforms like VMWare ESXi, Hyper-V, Xen, etc.
  • High Capacity. Up to 4 removable drives (72TB of total storage) on the 4 Bay. Up to 2 removable drives (36TB of total storage) on the 2 Bay.
  • Fully Enclosed. RAIDPac media fully encloses and protects the Hard Drives inside, making them ideal for offsite backup with high cycle usage.
  • No Drivers Required. Access the RAIDFrame via conventional UNC path (Windows Networking) or by connecting via iSCSI or NFS via Gigabit Ethernet connectivity.
  • Free iSCSI and Drive Management Software Included. Our software assists you in safely removing network attached drives, as well as making sure that drive letters stay consistent so that backup jobs run reliably.
  • Keyboard, Video, Mouse not Required. Appliance is fully HTML configurable. KVM may be used to check IP address or error conditions but are not needed for normal operation.

RAIDFrame Plus Customers:

  • Would like Network Attached Storage (NAS) but need enterprise class hardware and the ability to carry data off-site as needed.
  • Want a mirrored copy of internal drive created automatically (2 copies of all backup data).
  • Optionally want to delay or schedule mirroring so that the secondary RAIDPac(s) allow them to restore from a point in time.
  • Want security. Do not want users to have general storage access (Only one administrative account has access for backup).
  • Need fast as possible backup with support for iSCSI.
  • Want enough speed to do FULL backups, in case incremental doesn’t work when needed.
  • Need local, fast restore instead of waiting for cloud restore.
  • Want to supplement off-site cloud backup, or can only afford to off-site part of the data set, or simply don’t trust data off-site.
  • Want to be able to replicate data over the Internet to another NAS.  Note: allow extra space on source hard drive for replication snapshots.
  • May need to restore virtual environments from bare metal, which is hard or impossible to do with USB and eSATA since the stripped down hypervisor O.S. may not provide driver support.
  • Have servers that don’t support high speed (USB3 or eSATA) storage controllers or have blade servers with no PCI-e slots.
  • Do not have the budget for expensive SAN solutions.
  • Like the idea of U.S. company with telephone tech support for resellers and good customer service, along with ability to purchase 3 year advance replace warranty.

If these characteristics are what you’re looking for, the 2/4 bay RAIDFrame Plus is the perfect hardware platform for your backup needs.

Important Note:  In replication environments where files will be open and changing 24×7, the High-Rely “snapshot” feature can be used to track active file changes, providing integrity for the replication offsite.   When using this snapshot feature the worst case scenario would require having twice the space on the sending side of replication job as is required for your full data set.  For example, a very actively changing 1TB  data set might require up to a 2TB drive on the sending side of the replication to allow room for the snapshot. While doubling space is overly conservative in most cases, it should be considered in drive size planning.
