Cloud hacked again – Reputation.com reports breach

May 6th, 2013 by

In a continuing trend for cloud based companies, Reputation.com has said: the cloud hacked again.  They let users know via email on April 30th, 2013 that it’s data had been breached.  The company does not believe credit card data was taken, but the breach is particularly embarrassing because the company helps users manage their online identity.

The company said the hackers obtained names, date of birth, and possibly encrypted user login credentials. Since many people use the same passwords on multiple websites, usernames and passwords can be valuable because they can let hackers login to other sites to gain more information.  To it’s credit, reputation.com immediately notified users and changed passwords to mitigate damage.

Tape Sales Decline again in 2012

May 6th, 2013 by

hpAccording to Santa Clara Consulting Group, the total of all tape drives sold  in 2012 was 392 million with LTO tape drives representing 94% of that number.  In 2011 the number was 557 million, which shows a that tape sales decline 30% year over year.  Tape media declined from 776 million to 665 million, a 14% decline.  LTO-6 was launched at the end of the year and LTO-5 drives grew again, but the growth didn’t offset the lower volumes of earlier generations of tape.  Large tape libraries are still being sold and may help offset the decline of tape but the trend over the last 6 years has been downward, making us look prophetic for snagging the URL tapesucks.com back in 2003.
