4-Bay RAIDFrame BNAS Backup System.

Our 4-bay High-Rely RAIDFrame BNAS 4000 is a purpose built computer backup NAS system that delivers up to 144TB of backup storage capacity (RAID 0), using four removable 36TB RAIDPac storage devices. The unit includes Windows Storage Server installed to a front panel internal boot SSD. The solid state drive on this Windows-based backup NAS system allows backup and virtualization software to perform without delay. Intended as both a Backup Network Attached Storage (BNAS), or as a Backup and Disaster Recovery (BDR) solution. Two of the bays (Bay#3 and Bay#4) can be used to mirror each other, allowing point-in-time snapshots of your data, independently of the backup software.

The RAIDFrame BNAS 4000 is a NAS/BDR device running Windows Storage Server, with up to four removable RAIDpacs.

  • The RAIDFrame BNAS server backup device is designed with support for RAIDPac removable storage units.
  • Each RAIDPac backup drive appears as a single volume, but consists of three hard drives and a RAID 0/5 controller.
  • Our RAIDPacs are removable, like a USB drive, and are the largest hard drive for backup (currently up to 36TB).

  • The ability of Bay 3 and 4 to be mirrored (RAID 0+1 or RAID5+1) can save a lot of time making spare copies of large data sets, or can provide additional redundancy for the backup.

With mirroring turned on, neither Windows nor the backup software are aware when drives are swapped. Since the primary RAIDPac (typically Bay 3) can stay connected at all times, software issues associated with swapping drives are avoided. Once synced, the RAIDPac in bay 4 can be removed for offsite storage and a new mirror begins when the next RAIDPac is installed in the bay. Alternatively, configure each of the RAIDPacs as stand alone volumes and use one per server, one per day (four days), or design your own backup scenario.

*Note: When doing full nightly backups, redundancy is achieved by using new media each night, mitigating concerns of RAID 0 data loss upon single drive failure.

Do you need to configure your own backup appliance?

The Backup Network Attached Storage (BNAS) series is based on Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2016, which allows you to choose your own backup and virtualization software. Proprietary backup solutions lock you into their software, hard drive size, off-site vault location, and support. The RAIDFrame BNAS 4000 provides flexibility for you to configure your favorite backup software. This backup appliance mirrors removable RAIDPacs (purchase separately as needed). When restoring data from the Cloud takes too long when minutes count, this system uses high capacity RAIDPac backup drives that are extremely fast. If Internet bandwidth is unavailable, or cost prohibitive, this Windows based backup system fills the gap by using removable local storage. Use our RAIDFrame backup NAS to replace, supplement, or seed your Cloud backup strategy.

Each RAIDPac contains three SATA hard disks, which can be removed from our RAIDFrame and can be accessed as a spare drive.

Data retention is very important to us, which is why we built our removable backup drives to protect archived data in a durable enclosure. After all, what good is removable storage if it cannot be taken off-site? With the threat of maliciously deleted files and virus infections, natural disasters, such as fire, flood, or theft – removable media becomes a professional necessity. The use of off-line Removable Media is one of the BEST ways to assure data security because if it is not connected, it cannot be hacked, deleted, infected, maliciously encrypted, or downloaded!

Our removable, modular High-Rely RAIDPacs provide the answer. All High-Rely warranties cover backup devices for one year. Extended dynamic support contracts are available for up to three years, with advance replacement – including shipping costs to and from our factory.

The BNAS units comes equipped with two, or more, built-in receivers for our removable backup media, or RAIDPacs. This backup system includes proprietary hardware that can automatically mirror up to two removable drive bays, which allows for rotation and automatic replication of your backup data. It takes less than half a day for the BNAS to automatically mirror the internal drive after a media swap. This means the customer can choose to manage and transport data off-site with no monthly fees, or add your favorite data replication software to create a third data copy in the cloud (ask us about recommended backup, virtualization, and off-site cloud vendors for a complete solution).


RAIDFrame BNAS Customers:

  • Would like a Network Attached Storage (NAS), but need enterprise class hardware and the ability to carry data off-site, as needed.
  • Want a mirrored copy of the internal drive created automatically (2 copies of all backup data).
  • Want security. Do not want users to have general storage access (only one administrative account has access for backup).
  • Want enough speed to do FULL backups, in case incremental does not work when needed.
  • Need local, fast restore, instead of waiting for cloud restore.
  • Want to supplement off-site cloud backup, or can only afford to off-site part of the data set, or simply do not trust data off-site.

  • Like the idea of a U.S. company with telephone tech support for resellers, good customer service, and the ability to purchase a three year advance replace warranty.
  • May even use the RAIDFrame BNAS as a primary storage device by sharing drive bay #3 to their users and allowing bay#4 to mirror, creating a software-less backup. (This case is not recommended for “always active” multi-user data bases, such as Microsoft Exchange, or mission critical data – always maintain multiple backups.)

The BNAS family boots from an easily accessible, front panel 250GB SSD, and provides removable drives for your backup data. Depending on the configuration, a removable drive driven by our hardware based mirroring provides the ability to swap media and automatically create extra copies of data. This provides as many point-in-time, or archival, drives as are required. Mirroring occurs at approximately 200-300 Gigabytes per hour, so allow time for re-sync when swapping drives. Since the mirrored removable drive is managed via hardware, the backup software and operating system remain unaware of the extra drive copies. The mirrored removable drive also allows easy “seeding” of the off-site location. A seed is used when the data set is so large it would take weeks, or months, to get a full backup off-site, over an internet connection.

  • Based on a Windows Server OS. This Backup Appliance runs Windows 2016 storage server. CALS (Client access licenses) are not required for these operating systems. Join a domain and run any Windows backup software. Available with installed Windows Storage Server, or Workgroup editions as an upgrade.
  • Windows Storage Server 2016 Workgroup runs 1 cpu-socket, max 50 users, max 32GB RAM, max 6 hard drives, and does not have a license to run hyper-V hosts.  The Standard addition adds dhcp/dns/wins, failover clustering, and Hyper-V support.
  • Integrated removable mirrored drives. Unlike any other NAS, the BNAS series includes two, or more, integrated hot-swappable drive trays that fully protects a copy of main data drive. A mirror board allows multiple archives of data, which protects against corruption of main data store.
